How to Care for a New Dryback LVT Floor

The good news is that dryback LVT is easy to look after when you know what to do. You do not need specialist machinery, harsh chemicals, or a cupboard full of “essential” cleaning products. In most cases, simple habits make the biggest difference.

To care for a glue down LVT floor, use suitable barrier mats, sweep or vacuum regularly, damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner, protect furniture feet, avoid dragging heavy items, control excessive heat, and reduce prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.

Do

  • Use breathable, non-staining barrier mats at doorways.
  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit.
  • Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for LVT.
  • Use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaner where available.
  • Fit protective pads to furniture feet.
  • Lift furniture instead of dragging it.
  • Keep underfloor heating below 27°C.
  • Use curtains or blinds during strong sunlight on hot days.
  • Clean spills quickly.

Don’t

  • Use rubber, PVC, or latex-backed mats unless approved for vinyl.
  • Steam clean the floor.
  • Use bleach, abrasive cleaners, or harsh chemicals.
  • Flood the floor when mopping.
  • Drag heavy furniture across the surface.
  • Place portable heaters or heated mats directly on the floor.
  • Let furniture pads wear out or collect grit.
  • Allow strong sunlight or excessive heat to hit the same area for long periods.
LVT Do and Don't list

At Grimley Flooring, we have been working in the flooring industry since 2000. Over that time, we have fitted, repaired, inspected, and advised on many different types of flooring, including dryback LVT.

We have also undertaken training with multiple LVT suppliers and are members of the National Institute of Carpet and Floor Layers. That means our advice is based on real installation experience, manufacturer guidance, and years of seeing what helps floors last, and what causes avoidable problems.

Dryback LVT is a strong, practical floor, but it is not indestructible. Most long-term issues come from everyday habits: grit under shoes, unsuitable mats, harsh cleaners, furniture movement, heat, or direct sunlight.

A simple care routine helps prevent those problems before they happen.

Dryback LVT is glued directly to the subfloor, creating a stable and long-lasting finish when installed correctly. It is popular because it is durable, easy to clean, and available in a wide range of realistic wood, stone, and tile designs.

However, durable does not mean indestructible.

Fine grit can act like sandpaper. Chair legs can scratch or mark the surface. Harsh chemicals can dull the finish. Strong direct sunlight and heat can contribute to fading, discolouration, adhesive failure, lifting, or damage over time.

The right aftercare helps your new floor keep its appearance and performance for longer.

Barrier matting is one of the easiest ways to protect your flooring.

Its job is to catch grit, moisture, and dirt before it gets walked through the home. This matters whether the floor directly inside the doorway is LVT, carpet, wood, laminate, or anything else.

If your dryback LVT runs up to an entrance, barrier matting is especially important. If another flooring type sits at the doorway before the LVT, barrier matting is still useful because it reduces the amount of grit carried onto the LVT area.

Grit can travel through the home, so suitable barrier matting helps protect your dryback LVT even if the LVT is not fitted directly at the doorway.

Use barrier mats at relevant doorways such as:

Choose mats that are:

Cotton-backed mats, felt-backed mats, and mats specifically designed for vinyl or LVT are usually safer choices.

Avoid rubber-backed, PVC-backed, or latex-backed mats unless the manufacturer clearly states they are suitable for vinyl flooring. These can sometimes cause plasticiser migration, which may lead to permanent yellowing or discolouration. This can look similar to sun fading, but the cause is often a chemical reaction between the mat backing and the vinyl floor.

Grit is one of the biggest causes of avoidable surface scratches on LVT.

Small stones, dust, and outdoor dirt can mark the surface if they are repeatedly walked across the floor. Regular sweeping or vacuuming removes this grit before it causes damage.

For busy areas, sweep or vacuum a few times a week. For quieter rooms, once a week may be enough.

Use:

Avoid aggressive rotating brush heads unless they are approved for hard floors.

Dryback LVT should be cleaned with a damp mop, not a soaking wet one.

The floor covering itself is water-resistant, but that does not mean it should be flooded. Too much water can leave streaks, push dirt around, or work into edges and joints.

Use:

Mop in sections and rinse the mop head regularly. The floor should dry quickly after cleaning.

Most LVT manufacturers offer their own recommended cleaning products, and these should usually be your first choice. If your flooring manufacturer does not have a suitable cleaner available, Dr. Schutx Floor Care Kit can be a good general-purpose option for LVT. Always check the product label before use.

Avoid:

These products can dull the finish, leave residue, or affect the surface coating.

Dryback LVT is a practical choice for kitchens, hallways, and busy family spaces, but spills should still be wiped up promptly.

This is especially important for:

Use a soft cloth or damp mop. For sticky or greasy spills, use a suitable pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner.

Cleaning spills quickly helps reduce the risk of staining and keeps the surface finish looking consistent.

Furniture can easily cause avoidable marks on LVT if it is dragged or if the feet are rough, narrow, or damaged.

Fit protective pads to:

Felt pads are commonly used, but they should be checked and replaced regularly because they can collect grit over time.

For heavier furniture, use wider protective cups or glides designed for hard floors. These help spread the weight and reduce the risk of marking or indentation.

At Grimley Flooring, we recommend Stroolmount protective feet and furniture pads for LVT floors. They are designed to help reduce scratches, scuffs, and pressure marks from everyday furniture use.

These can be bought through us, so contact us for details.

Wheeled office chairs can wear or mark LVT if they roll repeatedly over the same area.

If you use an office chair on your dryback LVT floor, use a chair mat that is suitable for vinyl flooring or choose soft castors designed for hard floors.

Do not use rubber-backed chair mats unless they are clearly labelled as safe for vinyl flooring.

When moving furniture, lift it rather than dragging it across the floor.

Dragging heavy furniture can scratch, scuff, or tear the surface. Take extra care with appliances, large cabinets, sofas, and heavy tables.

If something is too heavy to lift safely, use moving pads or sliders that are suitable for vinyl flooring.

Strong direct sunlight can affect many types of flooring, including LVT. Over time, prolonged exposure to heat and UV light may contribute to fading, discolouration, or changes in appearance.

This is most likely near:

On very sunny or hot days, use curtains or blinds during the strongest sunlight. This helps reduce surface temperature, UV exposure, uneven fading, and possible heat-related stress.

This is especially important in rooms with large glass areas.

Heat can damage dryback LVT in more than one way.

Excessive heat can cause discolouration within the product. It can also affect the adhesive beneath the tiles, causing it to lose bond. If this happens, tiles may lift, curl, move, or become damaged.

Be careful with anything that produces or traps heat directly on the floor, such as:

Always follow the flooring manufacturer’s guidance. If you are unsure, keep direct heat sources away from the floor surface.

If you have underfloor heating beneath your dryback LVT, the floor surface temperature should never exceed 27°C.

This is important because too much heat can affect both the LVT and the adhesive system. If the floor gets too hot, it may lead to discolouration, movement, adhesive failure, lifting, or damage to the tiles.

To protect your floor:

Underfloor heating is brilliant with dryback LVT, but it needs to be controlled properly.

Pets and LVT can work well together, but long claws can contribute to surface marks, especially in hallways and busy rooms where pets run, turn, or come in from outside.

Keeping claws trimmed helps reduce the chance of scratches.

Barrier mats near entrances are also useful for pets, especially after wet walks or muddy garden trips. Wipe muddy paws where possible so grit is not carried across the floor.

  • Wipe spills quickly
  • Remove grit from entrances
  • Shake out or clean barrier mats
  • Wipe muddy pet paws where possible
  • Sweep or vacuum with a hard-floor-safe setting
  • Damp mop with a suitable cleaner if needed
  • Check furniture pads
  • Clean barrier mats
  • Inspect high-traffic areas
  • Replace worn or dirty felt pads
  • Review sunlight exposure in warmer months
  • Use blinds or curtains in rooms with strong sun
  • Check that furniture protectors are still secure
  • Review mats near entrances and replace if worn
  • Check underfloor heating settings before colder months
LVT Routine | Grimley Flooring Ltd
LVT to landing with matching stair nosing, striped carpet to stairs.

Can I steam clean dryback LVT?

Steam cleaning is usually not recommended for LVT. High heat and moisture can affect the floor surface, adhesive, or joints. Use a damp microfibre mop and a suitable vinyl floor cleaner instead.

What cleaner should I use on LVT?

Use a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for vinyl or LVT flooring. Most manufacturers have their own recommended cleaners, and these are usually the best place to start.

If your manufacturer does not offer a suitable cleaner, Dr. Schutz Floor Care Kit can be a good general-purpose option for LVT. Always check the product label before using it.

Can I use bleach on LVT?

Bleach is not recommended for routine LVT cleaning. It can be too harsh and may affect the finish or cause discolouration.

Are rubber-backed mats safe on LVT?

Not always. Some rubber, PVC, or latex-backed mats can react with vinyl flooring and may cause staining or yellow discolouration over time. Use breathable, non-staining mats that are suitable for vinyl or LVT.

Are Turtle Mats suitable for LVT?

Turtle Mats are often recommended by flooring professionals because many are designed to be absorbent and suitable for hard floors. However, always check the specific backing type and confirm it is safe for vinyl or LVT before use.

Will furniture scratch LVT?

Furniture can scratch LVT if it is dragged or if the feet are rough, narrow, or unprotected. Use suitable furniture protectors, such as Stroolmount protective feet or pads, and check them regularly.

Can sunlight damage LVT?

Strong direct sunlight and heat can contribute to fading, discolouration, adhesive issues, and movement over time. In rooms with large windows or strong sun, use curtains or blinds on hot days.

What temperature is safe for LVT with underfloor heating?

The floor surface temperature should never exceed 27°C. Higher temperatures can affect the LVT and the adhesive, potentially causing lifting, movement, or damage.

How often should I mop my dryback LVT floor?

Most dryback LVT floors only need damp mopping when they look dirty or after spills. Busy areas may need mopping weekly, while quieter rooms may need it less often.

Now you know the main things that help keep a dryback LVT floor looking its best: stop grit at the door, clean with a damp mop and suitable cleaner, protect furniture feet, avoid unsuitable mats, control heat, and reduce prolonged sunlight exposure.

If Grimley Flooring installed your LVT and you are unsure which cleaning product, mat, furniture protector, or underfloor heating setting is safe to use, ask us before trying something new.LVT Routine
